Dear United States Postal Service,
I get that in the grand scheme of things, you're still just a governmental agency. I get that you have to raise the price of stamps, and I get that you have to be closed on Sundays and hours outside of business hours (which always surprises me, organizations that are purely service-based should work the OPPOSITE hours of people who work in the product industry. But whatever).
I know you've got some stiff competition with UPS and FedEx and that other one that starts with a "D".
I figure you guys took a hit when people stopped writing by hand and started emailing people. Seriously, if you think about it, that's probably ALOT of dough lost. But in return, you guys are making BANK off online sales. You guys get a decent chunk of my cash as a result of online sales I make.
I was so excited when you guys allowed people to print postage at home. And for times where I couldn't do that, your Automated Postal Machine Doodads that work 24/7 were also life saviors.
Then...this week...I discovered the stupid sticker you have on your mail slots for packages: anything over 13 ounces now has to be physically handed to a USPS counter person due to "security" concerns (really? Sounds like a fantastic challenge for some dude to create a 12oz bomb). Plus, just because you put a little sign on there saying "13oz only" doesn't mean someone with a 5lbs package of anthrax will stop and say "damn! So much for popping this baby in the mail chute".
I can't begin to explain what a pain in the ass this has been for me. If I have to actually be at a post office during your retarded hours, then I might as well not bother printing postage at home or through your so-called automated device.
One step forward, eight steps back...way to go USPS.

Oh yes,
and thank you USPS, for the greatest lesson of all: if you want nationalized health insurance, go to the post office to ask for some assistance in mailing a package, or for help with a zip code, or for a question on weight and cost...and have someone YOUTUBE the face, demeanor and tone of the way you will be treated. THIS is what will happen to you at the doctors office. You will be told you are in the wrong line; that the person who handles that is on break, etc. etc. etc.
Part of the problem at the Post Office is the temperamental grid used to hire folks; on the Myers Briggs Scale they hire ISTJ's...but most the high introverts with sensing thinking skills (Spell Dr. SPOK from Star Trek). These folks cannot relate, but they can follow the damn rules and fill in the effin blanks, and make d sure nothing is done til every effin t is crossed and every effin i is dotted.
Forget the consumer, it's the govt. form that is taken care of and matters most.
Thanks, S, for wankin my chain.
Sabina, you CRACK me up! Thank you! :-) I'm sorry the post box solution I had for you on Sunday didn't work; at least you don't have to worry about something lighting a match and throwing it in the post box and burning your packages now.
Blame your woes on the USPS union which last I checked all government agencies are which only solves one problem and that is it's not a burden on the taxes we pay to Uncle Sam or in my case Mr. Prime Minister. They have to stay afloat with the money they make on user fees or whatever.
Being that I live in a country that has national health care, you are right Mr. Moderator that the lines are bad and good luck getting or keeping your GP but I'd much rather not have to pay for my healthcare rather than have to spend a few hundred dollars to go have blood taken or whatever. Yes the system isn't perfect but I'd rather feel safe knowing that if I break my arm and go to the emergency that I won't have to pay for the x-rays and cast. Whatever my provincial healthcare doesn't my employee benefits help out.
Back to the USPS thing... The reason why USPS doesn't work on it's customer skills is that I would bet that those counter-jockeys make more than those at FedEx, UPS, etc. If they make a couple of bucks more an hour than the other's why should they care about customer service?
I would guess that the 13oz limit is because many 13oz packages probably weighs a lot at the end of the day. :P They might have even commissioned a study on this.
Think of the poor letter carrier that has to empty a box full of 5lb packages... BRUTAL. :P
I didn't know you guys can print your own postage in the U.S!? That's cool.
Can't you use one of those other guys? I know it's more expensive and most people are ok with that if it means reliable package delivery and customer service for both the shipper and the shippee.
I feel your pain though I hate getting packages that were shipped with USPS because CanadaPost and USPS don't share tracking info.
